Trogon Lodge is a charming, family-run retreat tucked into the misty cloud forests of the Savegre Valley. Surrounded by lush gardens and mountain streams, it’s a peaceful haven for birdwatchers, especially those hoping to spot the elusive Resplendent Quetzal, and anyone looking to unwind in Costa Rica’s cool highland air. For photographers, the grounds alone are worth the visit. The gardens are full of flowering shrubs and hummingbird feeders that attract dozens of species throughout the day, so there is always something to point a lens at between hikes. The Savegre River runs right through the property, and the rustic wood cabins scattered among the landscaped grounds give the whole place a cozy, tucked away feeling that photographs beautifully. The lodge has two private trails that loop through the surrounding cloud forest, one short walk to a waterfall and a longer route that takes about an hour and a half. Both are well maintained and wind through moss covered oaks, giant ferns, and thick canopy, all in that soft, diffused cloud forest light. Over 170 bird species have been recorded in the area, and you have a real chance of spotting quetzals right from the trails or even from the restaurant terrace. Mornings are the best time to shoot when the mist is low and the birds are most active. It does get cold up here, especially at night, so pack layers. The lodge is about two hours southeast of San Jose off the Pan American Highway. (San Gerardo de Dota, San Jose Province, Costa Rica)
