About Tsutenkaku
Tsutenkaku is a soaring 100m steel tower sitting right in the centre of Shinsekai, Osaka's old entertainment district, painted light grey and wrapped in lit Hitachi advertising. Its four legs straddle the road, you can actually walk right through its legs. Tsutenkaku Hondori runs right up to it, this shopping street is tightly packed with bright shop signs and unique store decorations. After dark, the LED bands on the tower change colour through the year, plus the lights at the very top of the tower change colours to show the weather forecast for the following day (white for sunny, orange for cloudy, and blue for rain). You can explore the inside with its various viewing decks, open-air deck on top, a slide that winds its way down from the third floor and the Billiken good luck statue sitting on the fifth floor. It's an ideal spot to experiment with urban photography by backing up down one of the bustling shopping streets, where a telephoto lens from a block or two away stacks the intricate signs up against the tower. Make sure to stay for blue hour, when the pale steel, the glowing signs, and the sky sit close enough in brightness to hold detail in all three. Then stand right between the legs for a steep look up at the frame. Give yourself lots of time to explore this whole area after you are done capturing the tower itself.
