USS Hornet
The USS Hornet is a massive World War II aircraft carrier turned museum, permanently docked in Alameda and offering photographers a rare chance to shoot both sweeping exterior scenes and dramatic industrial interiors. From the dock, a wide-angle lens lets you capture the full scale of the hull and flight deck rising against the bay sky, and the bow angle gives you strong geometric lines. On deck, parked vintage aircraft make compelling foreground subjects with the San Francisco skyline or Bay Bridge visible in the distance on clear days. Overcast light works surprisingly well here, reducing harsh shadows on the gray steel surfaces. Inside, the hangar bay offers moody, layered compositions with aircraft, machinery, and narrow corridors of light. Arrive early when the crowds are thin and the morning light catches the hull from the east. (Alameda, California, United States)
