Vestrahorn

Vestrahorn - Photo by Darren Fast1 / 1

Vestrahorn is a dramatic, jagged mountain rising sharply from a black sand spit on Iceland's southeastern coast, its dark peaks reflected in shallow tidal pools and lagoons when conditions are right. The classic composition places the mountain as a backdrop behind the sweeping black beach, with the pools in the foreground acting as natural mirrors. You can also walk closer to the base of the mountain to emphasize its scale, or shoot along the waterline where small waves create motion blur against the dark sand. Golden hour is exceptional here, particularly around sunrise when warm light catches the rocky ridgelines and the low sun rakes across the textured sand. A wide angle lens works well for capturing the full scene, but a short telephoto can compress the mountain against a dramatic sky. The beach can be soft in places, so watch your footing, and be aware that weather changes quickly. (Stokksnes, East Iceland, Iceland)
