Victoria Barracks is a grand 19th-century military complex stretching along St Kilda Road, its long bluestone facade making it one of Melbourne's most striking examples of Victorian-era institutional architecture. The symmetrical colonnade and rhythmic arched windows reward a wide-angle lens, and shooting parallel to the building lets you use the repeating columns as a strong leading line. Early morning is ideal, when the low sun rakes across the bluestone texture and St Kilda Road traffic is light enough to work without crowds. Position yourself on the footpath opposite the main entrance to capture the full scale of the facade, or move closer to isolate the ornate detailing around the gates and stonework. On Sundays, free public tours open up the interior courtyards, giving you access to well-preserved parade grounds and heritage buildings that are otherwise off-limits. A 24-35mm range covers most compositions comfortably here. (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia)
