About Vidyasagar Setu from Prinsep Ghat

Vidyasagar Setu is a soaring cable-stayed bridge with two tall concrete towers and fans of steel cables. It passes over the Kolkata bank just south of Prinsep Ghat. From the ghat you are looking along the length of the span toward Howrah, with one tower rising almost overhead and the far one across the water. This peaceful little park along the water with a paved riverside walk, and wooden boats moored along the bank below. That path gives you lots of space to experiment with composition angles to find one that suits your shooting style. Plus you can easily get down to the shoreline and use the boats as a line leading toward the towers. The river runs southeast past the ghat and you are on the river's east bank, so the bridge lies between you and the setting sun. Most evenings the bridge turns into a silhouette against an orange/pink sky, the boats go black, and any haze over the river turns the towers to layers of grey. After dark the bridge is lit and the cables show up as thin lines of light, and a long exposure from the ghat picks up the reflections in the slow current. Early morning gives soft light on the water and you're more likely to have the area to yourself. The riverside promenade is public and free, but it fills up fast from late afternoon through sunset.
