View of Habitat 67 - Photo by Shawn M. Kent1 / 1

Habitat 67 is one of the most striking pieces of modernist architecture in North America, a cascading stack of 354 precast concrete modules that creates an almost sculptural mass along the St. Lawrence River. The best views are from the waterfront promenade across the river on the Old Port side, where you can frame the entire complex against the water and sky. A medium telephoto lens in the 70-200mm range lets you compress the stacked modules and emphasize the geometric repetition, while a wide angle works well if you get closer to the structure itself. Overcast days are ideal for architecture here since even light eliminates harsh shadows and lets the concrete textures read clearly; golden hour light from the east catches the facade beautifully in the morning. The Old Port waterfront is easily walkable and gives you several vantage points to shift your framing. (Montreal, Quebec, Canada)
