Welland Viaduct

Welland Viaduct - Photo by Christine Johnstone1 / 1

This Victorian brick giant stretches 1,275 metres across the Welland Valley, and its sheer scale makes it one of the most impressive railway structures in England. The best compositions use the repeating arches as a rhythm across the frame, either shooting from the valley floor to emphasize the height, or pulling back to a wider position to show the full sweep of the structure against open sky. A telephoto lens in the 70-200mm range lets you compress the arches into a dramatic pattern, while a wide angle works well when you are standing directly beneath the brickwork looking up. Golden hour light from the east catches the warm red brick beautifully in the morning, and overcast days reduce harsh shadows within the arches. The viaduct is accessible via footpaths through the surrounding fields; parking is available in Harringworth village and the walk to the valley floor is short.
