Windpark Raa-Besenbek is a working wind farm out on the flat marsh just west of Elmshorn, where eight wind turbines stand on either side of Altendeich (Hwy 431). This unique shooting location highlights the soaring turbines out in wide, empty fields under a lot of sky. The big clean shapes against open blue sky let you experiment with minimalist photography. You can work with just one turbine paired with plenty of negative space, or capture a row of them receding across the fields. With no hills or trees in the way, the low sun sits right on the horizon at either end of the day. Early or late in the day will give you long, clean silhouettes. On cold mornings the marsh often gets foggy and that contrast will soften everything behind the blades. The turbines sit in open, but privately owned farmland with public roads running between them. Make sure to work from the roads and verges rather than walking onto the farmland. (Raa-Besenbek, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany)
