Abandoned Car Graveyard

Abandoned Car Graveyard - Photo by Shawn M. Kent1 / 1

Tucked into the woods of Monaghan Forest just off the Rideau Trail, this cluster of at least five decaying vehicles offers a compelling mix of rust, overgrowth, and forgotten objects slowly being reclaimed by nature. The cars make strong subjects on their own, but the most interesting compositions come from shooting low and using the peeling metal, broken windows, and encroaching vegetation as layered foregrounds. Overcast days work best here, since soft diffused light brings out the texture of oxidized surfaces without harsh shadows cutting across the frames. A mid-range zoom gives you flexibility to isolate details like cracked dashboards or moss-covered hoods, while a wide angle captures the surrounding forest closing in. Wear sturdy shoes and watch your step throughout, as broken glass is scattered across the entire area. In summer the dense canopy can make the site hard to spot from the trail, so watch your GPS carefully. (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada)
