Alamo Square View

Alamo Square View - Photo by Vinicius Melo1 / 1

Alamo Square Park gives you one of San Francisco's most iconic compositions, where a row of ornate Victorian homes known as the Painted Ladies lines up against the modern downtown skyline in a single frame. The classic shot is taken from the gentle slope on the east side of the park, facing southeast, where you can stack the houses in the foreground with the Transamerica Pyramid and surrounding highrises rising behind them. A longer lens, around 70 to 135mm, helps compress that layered relationship between the Victorians and the skyline. Morning light is ideal, as the sun comes in from the east and illuminates the colorful facades directly while keeping the sky active. Arrive early on weekdays to avoid crowds on the lawn. Moving slightly uphill or downhill shifts how much sky or foreground grass you include, so experiment with your position before committing to a spot. (San Francisco, California, United States)
