Neptune Society Columbarium
This ornate Neo-Classical rotunda from 1898 is one of San Francisco's most overlooked architectural gems, featuring a striking copper dome, intricate facade details, and a hushed interior filled with stained glass, decorative niches, and urns that span over a century of history. Inside, the natural light filtering through colored windows creates a warm, jewel-toned atmosphere that rewards a wide-angle lens for sweeping interior shots and a longer focal length for isolating individual niches and their personal mementos. Shoot the exterior in the morning when soft light wraps around the dome without harsh shadows; inside, midday works surprisingly well since the windows are your primary light source. The building is free to visit and open to the public during regular hours. Bring a tripod if possible since interior exposures can run long, and take time to explore all four floors for details and symmetry shots. (San Francisco, California, United States)
