About Amelia Earhart Memorial
The Amelia Earhart statue is a life-size bronze statue along the Harbour Grace waterfront, a short walk from the visitor chalet at the south end of town. She is posed looking up toward the hill where the old airstrip sits, the one she took off from in May 1932 on the first solo Atlantic crossing by a woman. Behind her is the Spirit of Harbour Grace, a DC-3 kept on display, and a few hundred metres just off shore sits the rusting hull of the SS Kyle. That gives you three subjects within one stop. Shoot the statue tight against the sky to keep the plane out, or step back with a wide lens and stack her, the DC-3, and the water behind them in one frame. Fog is common in Conception Bay and softens the plane while the statue stays sharp in the foreground. Plaques beside the statue give the flight details if you want them for a caption.
