Arbroath Abbey
Founded by William the Lion in 1178, in memory of martyr Thomas Becket, Arbroath Abbey remained one of the nation’s grandest monasteries for almost 400 years. The king was buried in front of the abbey’s high altar following his death in 1214. Before this, Scottish monarchs had traditionally been laid to rest in the royal mausoleum at Dunfermline Abbey.
