Broughty Castle

Broughty Castle - Photo by Stacey Walsh1 / 1

Broughty Castle stands on the mouth of the Firth of Tay, built in the late 1400s in response to increased English naval activity. The castle has had quite the colourful history, being involved in numerous battles over the years and its ownership changing hands numerous times. It eventually became owned by the military, at one point housing a military school and later acting as garrison headquarters for the Tay Division Submarine Miners Royal Engineers (Volunteers). Broughty’s final alteration came during World War II when a defence post was built at the top of the tower house in 1942. Today its purpose is considerably less warlike: it’s now open to the public as a museum where you can explore the castle and take in it's beautiful views. (Broughty Ferry, Dundee, Scotland)
