Atlas Statue
The Atlas statue at 30 Rockefeller Plaza is one of New York City's most striking bronze sculptures, standing over 45 feet tall with the art deco facade of 30 Rock rising directly behind it. The classic shot frames Atlas from slightly below and straight on, using a wide to standard lens to capture both the figure and the geometric stonework behind it. A 24-35mm lens works well for keeping the full figure in frame while including the architectural context. Overcast days are ideal since direct sunlight creates harsh shadows across the sculpture's details, though early morning gives you cleaner shots with fewer crowds on the surrounding plaza. Step back toward Fifth Avenue to compress the figure against the building, or move in close and shoot upward to emphasize the dramatic pose and the weight of the celestial sphere. Midweek mornings offer the least foot traffic. (New York City, New York, United States)
