Banff Park Administration Building

This handsome stone building from 1935 is one of Banff's most photographically rewarding pieces of architecture, blending Tudor Gothic Revival details like steep gabled rooflines, decorative stonework, and arched entryways with a backdrop of forested mountain slopes. Shoot from across the street to capture the full symmetrical facade, or move in closer to isolate the carved stonework and window details with a mid-range or telephoto lens. A wider angle works well if you want to include the surrounding spruce trees framing the building on either side. Morning light hits the front facade cleanly, making it the preferred time for even, flattering illumination without harsh shadows. The building sits right in Banff townsite and is easy to reach on foot; the surrounding lawn and pathway give you plenty of room to adjust your framing. In winter, snow on the rooflines adds strong visual contrast against the dark stone. (Banff, Alberta, Canada)
