Bow River Viewpoint

Bow River Viewpoint - Photo by mikekent.com1 / 1

Perched at the southern edge of Banff townsite, this viewpoint gives you a sweeping look at the turquoise Bow River as it curves through a valley framed by the Rocky Mountains on all sides. The glacial color of the water is the star of the shot, especially vivid on overcast days when the soft light saturates the teal tones without harsh shadows. Position yourself along the railing or drop down toward the riverbank to get the water in your foreground with the peaks rising behind. A wide angle lens works well to capture the full mountain backdrop, while a telephoto lets you compress the layers of ridgelines. Early morning is ideal for calm reflections and cooler light before the crowds arrive. From here you can also follow the trail downstream to Bow Falls, a strong secondary composition worth adding to the same session. (Banff, Alberta, Canada)
