Bank of Montreal Head Offices

Bank of Montreal Head Offices - Photo by Shawn M. Kent1 / 1

This neoclassical landmark anchors the northwest corner of Place d'Armes in Old Montreal, its grand colonnaded facade and domed interior making it one of the most architecturally striking buildings in the city. From the square, you can compose wide shots that incorporate the full portico with its six Corinthian columns, or position yourself lower to emphasize the steps and stone detailing against the sky. A wide to standard zoom in the 24-70mm range works well here, letting you shift between full facade compositions and tighter detail shots of the carved stonework and frieze. Step inside to photograph the ornate banking hall, where a coffered dome and marble counters create a dramatic interior scene. Midday light in summer can be harsh on the south-facing facade, so overcast days or early morning work best for even illumination outdoors. The square gives you plenty of room to back up and frame the building without obstruction. (Montreal, Quebec, Canada)
