Bernal Heights Park is a grassy hilltop park in the Bernal Heights neighbourhood. The skyline views are definitely worth the effort it takes to climb it. Downtown sits just north of the summit, so the financial district stacks up in front of you with the low rooftops of the neighbourhood sprawling underneath. A long lens compresses the view into something dense, highlighting the bustling feel of the city. The hill has photogenic views spreading out below it on every side, so one slow walk around the top gives you several different backgrounds without going far. Sunset light is amazing up here as it spreads across the towers, then the city lights come up and blue hour creates even more shooting options. Afternoon fog often sits on Twin Peaks while Bernal stays clear, so this hill still works when the west side of the city is socked in. Grass covers the slopes, and spring brings wildflowers you can easily add into the foreground. It's exposed up there and the wind is constant, so you may need to weight your tripod. The park is easy to access with Bernal Heights Boulevard looping the summit. The highest part of it is closed to cars, so you'll have to walk up the hill. The park is free to explore and open from dawn to dusk so it's a great spot to experiment with both sunrise and sunset photography. (San Francisco, California, USA)
