Mt. Davidson Cross is a towering 103-foot concrete cross perched at the highest point in San Francisco, surrounded by dense eucalyptus forest that creates a dramatic, cathedral-like atmosphere on the hike up. The cross itself photographs well from below, where you can use a wide-angle lens to exaggerate its height against the sky, or position yourself to frame it through the overhanging tree canopy for a more layered composition. The wooded trail leading to the summit offers its own opportunities, with dappled light filtering through the trees and long shadows cutting across the path. Early morning or overcast days work best, as the fog that frequently rolls through the area adds mood and mystery to both the forest and the cross. The summit also offers open views over the surrounding neighborhoods toward the bay. The trail is a moderate uphill walk of about ten minutes from the nearest street access.
