Búðakirkja
Standing alone on a lava field against the dramatic backdrop of the Snæfellsjökull glacier and open Atlantic sky, this small black wooden church is one of Iceland's most iconic and photogenic subjects. The contrast between the jet-black painted exterior and whatever the sky is doing, whether stormy clouds, golden light, or a clear blue day, gives you strong graphic compositions even in simple two-element framing. Shoot from low and wide to emphasize the rough lava field in the foreground, or step back with a longer focal length to compress the church against the glacier behind it. The golden hour light around sunset and sunrise wraps beautifully around the structure, and overcast days can actually enhance the moody drama. A wide angle lens in the 16-35mm range works well, and the church is accessible year-round via a short walk from the small parking area at Búðir. (Búðir, Snæfellsnes, Iceland)
