About Cabane de Prarochet
Cabane de Prarochet is a small stone mountain hut with breathtaking views looking out over the limestone plateau sitting just below the Tsanfleuron glacier. Around the hut the ground is bare rock, cracked into deep grooves and hollows by rain and by the ice that used to cover it. That surface is the reason to come. It photographs well in low sun, when the grooves fill with shadow and the pattern reads right across a wide frame. Use the hut as a point of scale against all that grey. Old moraine ridges mark where the glacier reached in the 1800s, and the ice now sits well back from them. Bearded vultures pass overhead here. Weather turns fast at this height, so cloud breaking over the plateau is worth waiting out. The walk in starts at the Col du Sanetsch, and the effort of the hike is definitely worth the incredible views. The upper part of the trail is marked by cairns and paint on the rock rather than signposts. Meals and dorm beds are available, make sure to check the hut's schedule when planning your shooting adventure. The roads in this area shutdown for the winter, usually from November until some point in May, so make sure to check whether there are open before you commit to the drive.
