California Street cuts through the Financial District and offers one of the most satisfying urban compositions in San Francisco, where historic cable cars run straight down a canyon of glass towers with the Bay Bridge sitting perfectly centered in the distance. The shot works best from street level on the north side of California Street, positioned so the cable car tracks lead your eye through the buildings and out toward the bridge. A telephoto lens in the 70-200mm range is ideal here, compressing the scene and pulling the bridge closer while stacking the architecture tightly together. Morning light hits the street well before midday, and overcast days actually work in your favor by keeping harsh shadows off the building facades. Wait for a cable car to enter your frame for a strong foreground element. The street is busy, so be mindful of traffic and give yourself time to find your exact position on the sidewalk.
