Grace Cathedral

Perched atop Nob Hill, Grace Cathedral is one of the finest examples of French Gothic architecture in the United States, and its east facade offers a striking composition with the ornate bronze doors, rose window, and twin towers all visible from the steps of Huntington Park across the street. Shoot from the park to compress the facade with a short telephoto, or get close with a wide angle to exaggerate the towers reaching skyward. Inside, the stained glass windows glow richly during midday when sunlight filters through, casting colored light across the nave; arrive on a weekday morning for fewer crowds and cleaner interiors. The labyrinth on the floor makes for a strong overhead or low angle detail shot. The cathedral is fully accessible from Taylor Street, and the surrounding Nob Hill streets offer additional urban context for wider environmental compositions.
