Canary Spring is one of the most visually striking thermal features at Mammoth Hot Springs, where cascading travertine terraces glow in shades of cream, yellow, and orange while skeletal dead trees rise from the mineral-crusted landscape. The contrast between the bleached tree trunks and the warm-toned terraces makes for compelling compositions; try shooting upward through the dead branches with the colorful terraces as a backdrop, or frame the cascading pools with the ghostly trees in the foreground. Overcast days are ideal here since diffused light reduces harsh reflections on the wet travertine and brings out the subtle color gradations. Arrive early in the morning to avoid crowds on the boardwalks, which limit where you can stand but do offer elevated vantage points over the terraces. A wide-angle lens works well for capturing the full sweep of the formations, while a longer focal length isolates the tree and terrace details beautifully.
