Carre Saint-Louis

Square Saint-Louis is a Victorian-era public square in the Plateau-Mont-Royal neighbourhood, framed by a row of ornate Second Empire townhouses that give it one of the most cohesive and photogenic streetscapes in Montreal. The symmetry of the square works well with a wide or standard lens; position yourself at either end of the central fountain to use the tree-lined path as a leading line toward the facades opposite. Winter visits after a fresh snowfall are particularly rewarding, as the snow quiets the scene and highlights the architecture, but summer brings dense green canopies that contrast beautifully with the colourful painted ironwork on the homes. Overcast days soften shadows and flatter the intricate architectural details, while golden hour adds warm tones to the stone and brick facades. The square is pedestrian-friendly and easy to navigate, with plenty of spots to set up without obstruction. (Montreal, Quebec, Canada)
