Laval Ave Architecture

Laval Avenue is a tree-lined residential street in the Plateau-Mont-Royal neighbourhood, celebrated for its preserved Victorian and Second Empire row houses featuring ornate ironwork staircases, decorative cornices, and steeply pitched roofs that become especially striking after a fresh snowfall. Walk the length of the street and look for tight compositions that compress the repeating facades, or get low on the sidewalk to use the iconic exterior staircases as foreground elements leading into the frame. Overcast days work beautifully here by softening shadows and bringing out the texture in the stone, while golden hour adds warm contrast to the ironwork and masonry details. A 24-70mm lens gives you flexibility between wide establishing shots and tighter architectural details. Street parking is available and the area is pedestrian-friendly, so you can take your time moving up and down the block without feeling rushed. (Montreal, Quebec, Canada)
