Parc Laval Area
This quiet residential street in the Plateau-Mont-Royal neighbourhood offers a textbook composition of classic Montreal architecture, with rows of colourful duplexes and triplexes fronted by the iconic exterior spiral staircases the city is known for. The staircases themselves are your main subject, so work in close with a 35mm or 50mm lens to isolate their wrought iron curves against the painted facades, or step back with a wider angle to capture the full rhythm of the streetscape receding into the distance. Overcast days are ideal since flat light brings out the saturated colours of the buildings without harsh shadows cutting across the stairs. Winter visits after a fresh snowfall add strong contrast and texture, with white snow settling on the dark iron railings. Street level shooting works well, and the area is fully walkable with easy access from nearby metro stations. (Montreal, Quebec, Canada)
