Castel Sant'Angelo

Castel Sant'Angelo - Photo by Thomas Wolf1 / 1

Rising from the banks of the Tiber, this massive cylindrical fortress offers some of Rome's most dramatic architectural photography, with its layered Roman stonework, Renaissance additions, and the famous bronze angel statue crowning the top. The classic shot is from Ponte Sant'Angelo, the pedestrian bridge lined with Bernini's marble angels, which gives you a strong leading line straight toward the castle, especially effective at blue hour when the structure is lit against the darkening sky. Golden hour before sunset casts warm light across the travertine facade, while early morning keeps the bridge clear of crowds. A wide angle lens handles the full scene well, but a short telephoto lets you isolate the rooftop angel or compress the bridge statues against the fortress. For a less expected angle, try shooting from the Tiber embankment below to emphasize the sheer scale of the cylindrical base. (Rome, Lazio, Italy)
