Castello di Canossa is a historic hilltop fortress sitting high above the surrounding valley. Once a powerful stronghold in medieval Italy, it is most famous as the site of the 1077 meeting between Emperor Henry IV and Pope Gregory VII. Today, the remains of the castle sit atop a steep rocky ridge, with partial walls and towers that hint at its former scale. The elevated position provides wide, open views across rolling hills and distant ridge lines, while the rugged terrain and stone ruins create strong structural elements within the landscape. Accessible via a short uphill walk from nearby parking, the site offers a mix of history and expansive scenery in a quiet rural setting. (Canossa, Province of Reggio Emilia, Italy)
