Castello di Canossa is a historic hilltop fortress sitting high above the surrounding valley. Once a powerful stronghold in medieval Italy, it is most famous as the site of the 1077 meeting between Emperor Henry IV and Pope Gregory VII. Today, the remains of the castle sit atop a steep rocky ridge, with partial walls and towers that hint at its former scale.
