Chapel of St. Ignatius Bell Tower
The Chapel of St. Ignatius is a sculptural modernist building on the Seattle University campus, designed by Steven Holl with a striking composition of geometric volumes, colored light lenses, and textured concrete that rewards close architectural photography. The bell tower in particular offers strong graphic lines against the sky, and you can find compelling abstracts by isolating the tower's angular forms with a telephoto lens or shooting wide to include the surrounding reflecting pool, which mirrors the structure beautifully on calm days. Overcast light works especially well here, softening shadows and letting the building's texture and form read clearly without harsh contrast. The colored glass baffles glow warmly at dusk when interior light becomes visible from outside. The campus is pedestrian-friendly and the chapel grounds are open to walk around freely, giving you multiple vantage points. A 24-70mm range covers most compositions well.
