This intimate Gothic Revival chapel sits within the grounds of Dublin Castle, built in 1814 and decorated with an extraordinary density of heraldic stonework, fan vaulting, and carved oak woodwork that rewards close attention through a lens. Inside, you will find rich stained glass windows that backlight beautifully in the morning when light pushes through from the east, casting coloured patterns across the pale stone interior. Work with a wide angle lens to capture the full vaulted ceiling and the layered depth of the nave, then switch to a longer focal length to isolate the intricate carved details of the gallery and plasterwork. Shoot from the rear of the chapel looking toward the altar for the strongest compositional lines. The space is relatively small and can fill with tour groups midday, so arriving early in the morning gives you quieter, calmer light and more room to compose freely. (Dublin, Leinster, Ireland)
