The Château du Girsberg is one of three castle ruins (with the Château de Saint-Ulrich and the Haut-Ribeaupierre) that sit high on the hilltop overlooking the surrounding valley. The Lords of Ribeaupierre built the castle in the early 13th century (and rebuilt it after a fire caused by lightning in 1288). In 1304, it was given it to the knights of Guirsberg, from whom the castle took its name. The Guirsbergs kept it until they died out in the 15th century and it was eventually entirely abandoned in the 17th century. (Ribeauvillé, France)
