The majolica-tiled dome of this 10th-century church is one of the most iconic images in all of the Amalfi Coast, its geometric pattern of yellow, green, and blue tiles popping brilliantly against the sky and the sea below. The classic shot is from above the church, looking down from the hillside paths and stairways of Positano, where you can compress the dome against the rooftops and the water behind it. A short telephoto in the 70-135mm range works well for this compression. Morning light hits the dome cleanly before the scene gets hazy, and overcast days can actually bring out the tile colors more evenly than harsh midday sun. You can also work from the church square itself for tighter architectural details on the facade and dome. The surrounding stairways offer constantly shifting angles as you move higher through the village. (Positano, Campania, Italy)
