Below the hamlet of Pezzo, on the road climbing toward the Passo Gavia, Chiesetta di Sant'Apollonio sits alone on a small hilltop. It is one of the oldest churches in the valley. It is a quaint chapel with the bell tower is built straight onto the back of it. The roof is stone slab, cut from quarries further up the valley. The chapel sits lined up perfectly that you can shoot it small against a rolling mountain backdrop. The back of the church gives you interesting lines to experiment with where the tower meets the curved end wall. Low sun brings out the stonework and highlights the texture of the slab roof. A blanket of snow gives the church a minimalist feel, while the larches turning colour in autumn add brightness and pops of colour. Inside, the end wall holds fourteenth century paintings, a Christ in majesty with the apostles below and prophets around the arch. Although it may be tricky to access the interior because the chapel is only open for guided visits rather than daily, so you may have to check locally before you head out to the church. A marked path from Pezzo to Case di Viso runs past it if you want the walk, but there is lots of space to park nearby. (Ponte di Legno, Lombardy, Italy)
