McLean Mill is the only remaining steam-powered sawmill in Canada, set in a forested valley outside Port Alberni on Vancouver Island, and it offers a rare chance to photograph industrial heritage surrounded by towering trees. The weathered wooden structures, rusted machinery, and network of pipes and steam lines give you rich textures to work with, especially up close with a macro or short telephoto lens. When the mill is operating, steam venting from the equipment adds atmosphere and drama to your shots, so timing your visit around a demonstration is well worth it. Overcast days work beautifully here because the soft diffused light brings out the wood grain and metal detail without harsh shadows. Wide angles work well for capturing the full scale of the mill buildings against the forest backdrop, while tighter compositions isolate individual gears, levers, and worn timber surfaces.
