Hole In The Wall
This hidden waterfall runs through a tunnel blasted into solid rock, creating one of the most unusual compositions on Vancouver Island. A creek flows directly through the man-made opening and drops into a clear green pool below, giving you a natural frame within a frame that is hard to find anywhere else. Position yourself low near the pool to capture the tunnel as a leading element with the waterfall centered inside it, or move further back to include the surrounding moss-covered rock face for context. Overcast days are ideal here since the forest canopy and rock walls create deep shadows, and flat light keeps the water and pool evenly exposed without harsh contrast. A wide angle lens in the 16 to 24mm range works well. Wear waterproof footwear as the ground around the pool stays wet, and a tripod will help you achieve silky water in the lower light conditions.
