Perched on a hillside above Florence, this monumental cemetery wraps around the fortified walls of the Basilica of San Miniato al Monte and offers one of the most quietly dramatic vantage points in the city. The combination of ornate family tombs, cypress trees, stone sculptures, and crumbling neoclassical mausoleums gives you rich foreground material to layer against sweeping views of the Florentine skyline. Walk toward the upper terraces to frame the Duomo and surrounding rooftops between grave monuments and cypress silhouettes, a composition that rewards a short telephoto lens in the 70-135mm range. Golden hour light, especially in the late afternoon, warms the stone and terracotta tones beautifully and casts long shadows through the cypress alleys. The cemetery is free to enter and rarely crowded, so you can move slowly and work the details without pressure. Bring a wide lens too for the tight passages between elaborate tomb facades.
