Corridors Under Fort Point
The brick corridors and arched casemates inside Fort Point offer a dramatically different perspective on this Civil War-era fortress, letting you work with repeating architectural geometry and moody interior light. The long vaulted hallways create strong leading lines that draw the eye deep into the frame, and the layered archways stack beautifully when shot straight-on with a wide to standard lens. Natural light filters in from the open embrasures and courtyard openings, creating strong contrast between warm brick and deep shadow; this works especially well on overcast days when the light is diffused and even, or during the golden hour when warm tones saturate the old masonry. Bring a tripod since the interiors can be quite dark, and explore multiple levels for different compositions. The fort is free to enter and sits directly beneath the Golden Gate Bridge.
