Batteries to Bluffs
Batteries to Bluffs is a rugged trail system in the Presidio that puts you at eye level with the Golden Gate Bridge's north tower, offering some of the most dramatic and underrated angles on the bridge in the entire city. The crumbling concrete battery fortifications scattered along the path add texture and foreground interest, letting you frame the bridge through deteriorating archways or use weathered walls to anchor a composition. The western-facing bluffs are ideal for shooting at golden hour and sunset, when warm light floods the bridge and the Pacific stretches out behind it. A wide-angle lens works well for capturing both the ruins and the bridge in a single frame, while a telephoto lets you compress the distance and isolate the tower against the sky. The trail has some uneven terrain, so wear solid shoes and arrive early on weekends to avoid crowds on the best viewpoints. (Presidio of San Francisco, California, United States)
