Battery Boutelle
Battery Boutelle is a historic coastal gun emplacement tucked into the Presidio hillside, offering one of the closest and most dramatic ground-level views of the Golden Gate Bridge you will find anywhere in San Francisco. The battery sits almost directly beneath the bridge's south tower, letting you shoot upward at the tower's full height while including the old concrete fortifications as a foreground element. Wide angle lenses in the 16-24mm range work especially well here, allowing you to combine the rugged military ruins with the bridge and the Marin Headlands beyond. Early morning is ideal, when fog often rolls through the gate and wraps around the tower in layers. The site is easily walkable from the nearby parking area and remains uncrowded compared to the more popular overlooks above. Move along the battery walls to vary your framing and find clean lines between the historic stonework and the bridge cables overhead. (San Francisco, California, United States)
