Coteau-du-Lac Lighthouse

Coteau-du-Lac Lighthouse - Photo by Shawn M. Kent1 / 1

The Coteau-du-Lac Lighthouse appears to sit almost randomly on the side of the road but originally this area was a clearing and the lighthouse was carefully placed to be one of the leading lights that formed a line which guided vessels entering the Soulanges Canal. When the commander of the boat from the Lake St. Francis saw two lights aligned, this meant that he was in the right direction towards the channel entrance and could move forward without fear. Now the area has built up and the lighthouse sits in the middle of a wooded park and is not used as a navigational aid. (Coteau-du-Lac, Quebec, Canada)
