Dendrites
Dendrites is a pair of monumental staircase sculptures by Michel de Broin, rising from both sides of Notre-Dame Street in Montreal like the branching trunks of enormous trees. The intertwining steel forms create strong graphic silhouettes that reward wide and medium focal lengths equally, and shooting from street level looking upward emphasizes the scale and complexity of the branching network against the sky. Overcast days are ideal for bringing out the sculptural detail without harsh shadows, though a clear blue sky adds strong contrast to the dark metal forms. You can walk through and around the structures, so try close abstract compositions focusing on the repeating branch patterns as well as wider shots that show both trunks together with Notre-Dame Street as context. The sculptures are fully accessible from the sidewalk with no restrictions, making this a flexible spot to explore at your own pace. (Montreal, Quebec, Canada)
