This coastal lookout gives you an unobstructed view of Diamond Head crater rising above the Honolulu shoreline, with the Pacific Ocean stretching out in the foreground and the curve of the coastline leading your eye toward the iconic silhouette. The volcanic profile is most dramatic when shot from a slightly lower angle, letting the water and rocky shore anchor the frame while the crater dominates the background. A medium telephoto lens in the 70-200mm range helps compress the scene and isolate the crater against the sky, while a wider lens works well if you want to include more of the coastline as a leading line. Early morning offers the best light, with warm tones washing over the crater face and calm water that can give you clean reflections; midday light tends to flatten the texture of the volcanic slopes. Parking is available along the coastal road and the viewpoint itself is easy to reach on foot. (Honolulu, Hawaii, United States)
