Dimmuborgir Lava Field

Dimmuborgir is a dramatic field of collapsed lava formations on the eastern shore of Lake Mývatn, where twisted basalt pillars, arches, and cave openings create a landscape that feels alien. The dark, jagged towers rise several meters above the walking paths, giving you endless compositions to experiment with against open sky or moody clouds. Shooting low and angling upward through gaps between formations emphasizes their scale and alien character, while tighter compositions lets you play with individual arches or textured surfaces. Overcast days actually work in your favor here, softening the harsh shadows in the crevices and bringing out the rich dark tones of the basalt. The site has well maintained walking loops ranging from short to moderate length, so you can move through the field and scout multiple angles without backtracking.
