Grjótagjá Cave Surface Cracks
The surface cracks at Grjótagjá stretch across the lava field as a dramatic fissure system where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates pull apart, creating jagged splits in the black basalt that make for striking foreground elements. Get low and shoot along the length of the fissure to use it as a leading line toward the distant hills or Lake Mývatn, or position yourself directly above a wider crack to emphasize the depth and texture of the fractured rock. Overcast days work well here by reducing harsh shadows inside the crevices and bringing out the detail in the dark basalt, though golden hour adds warm contrast to the rough surfaces. A wide angle lens lets you exaggerate the scale of the fissures while keeping the surrounding landscape in frame. The area is easy to walk around and sits just steps from the cave entrance.
