Dimmuborgir
Dimmuborgir is a dramatic field of collapsed lava formations on the eastern shore of Lake Mývatn, where twisted basalt pillars, arches, and cave openings create a landscape that feels almost constructed rather than natural. The dark, jagged towers rise several meters above the walking paths, giving you endless foreground interest to work with against open sky or moody clouds. Shooting low and angling upward through gaps between formations emphasizes their scale and alien character, while tighter compositions isolate individual arches or textured surfaces. Overcast days actually work in your favor here, softening harsh shadows in the crevices and bringing out the rich dark tones of the basalt. The site has well-maintained walking loops ranging from short to moderate length, so you can move through the field and scout multiple angles without backtracking. A wide-angle lens suits the dense formations well, though a short telephoto helps isolate details in the rock faces. (Skutustaðahreppur, Northeast Iceland, Iceland)
