Epine GY7 Shipwreck
Resting on a black volcanic beach within Snæfellsjökull National Park, the rusted iron hull fragments of this British trawler make for a striking and melancholy subject against Iceland's dramatic coastal scenery. The dark weathered metal contrasts beautifully with the black sand, crashing Atlantic surf, and the glacier-capped Snæfellsjökull volcano looming in the background. Get low and use a wide angle lens to exaggerate the scale of the wreck against the sky, or isolate individual rust-textured details with a longer focal length. Overcast days are ideal here, as flat diffused light brings out the deep orange tones in the corroded iron without harsh shadows. Golden hour adds warmth and atmosphere if skies cooperate. The beach is accessible from the road with a short walk, and the area around the wreck is open enough to move freely and experiment with foreground compositions using the surf and sand.
