Fort Petrie sits on a rocky headland overlooking the entrance to Sydney Harbour, where a preserved Second World War coastal defence battery offers a rare mix of military history and dramatic seascape photography. The three-level observation tower gives you elevated views across the open Atlantic and back toward the Cape Breton Highlands, making it worth climbing for wide establishing shots. At ground level, the concrete bunker structures and weathered fortifications work well as foreground elements with the water behind, especially with a wide-angle lens to emphasize scale and texture. Golden hour light in the evening hits the stone and concrete warmly and casts long shadows across the fortifications. The surrounding rocky shoreline also rewards close exploration for detail shots and wave action. Access is straightforward and the site is open to walk around freely, giving you plenty of room to experiment with both architectural and landscape compositions. (Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada)
